Growing up, I was always mesmerised by stories of my great-grandmother, Aki Takahashi—a master kimono maker in the mountain town of Gifu, Japan. Her fingers worked with the silent poetry that only true artisans possess, coaxing vibrant silks into garments that told a tale of generations, care, and beauty. The rhythmic sound of her needle and the subtle scent of delicate fabrics lingered in my childhood imagination, guiding me as I began my own creative journey.
This reverence for Japanese textiles and craftsmanship first manifested as Aki Takahashi and then later 51°.—a bespoke, made-to-order fashion label named in honor of my great-grandmother. With these brands, I brought vintage kimono fabrics to life again, upcycling them into contemporary jackets that held whispers of tradition and bold new perspectives. Every piece was a quiet conversation between past and present, each stitch an act of appreciation for the artistry and spirit of Japanese materials.
Today, as the founder of MOSAIK, that thread of heritage winds through everything I create. The limited edition upcycled vintage kimono Kinchaku Duo Cleanser Set are a tribute not just to the elegance of Japanese design, but to my great-grandmother’s legacy—a way of bringing the soul of Gifu’s kimono craft into modern rituals. The kinchaku, a traditional drawstring bag, represents both the practicality and beauty of Japanese everyday life. For MOSAIK, each kinchaku set is more than an accessory; it’s a vessel of history, made meaningful through thoughtful reuse and design.
My lifelong fascination with Japanese culture and textiles is rooted in a belief that true artisanship—known in Japan as “Shokuninsan”—must be preserved and celebrated. In a world powered by speed and digital replication, originality, tradition, and the subtle touch of the hand risk fading into obscurity. MOSAIK stands apart by cherishing heritage, valuing collaboration, and creating products that honor the craftspeople behind them.
Collaboration is not just a pillar of MOSAIK’s future, it’s the heart of our development. Each partnership and project is guided by openness and intention, echoing the human values I wish to see reflected in every aspect of the brand. My aim is for MOSAIK to resonate with people—regardless of culture, background, or age—by creating meaningful connections and celebrating diversity in craft. All whilst share the journey and mission to empowering our community to achieve healthy, resilient and glowing skin.
