Understanding Acne: MOSAIK’s Dermatological Approach

Acne is one of the most common dermatological conditions worldwide. While often associated with adolescence, it affects individuals across all ages, skin types, and backgrounds. Beyond its visible symptoms, acne can influence confidence, comfort, and daily wellbeing.

At MOSAIK, we approach acne through the lens of skin health, barrier integrity, and long-term resilience. Rather than relying on aggressive or overly stripping treatments, our philosophy focuses on supporting the skin’s natural processes while reducing inflammation and follicular congestion.

Acne develops within the pilosebaceous unit — the structure consisting of the hair follicle and its associated sebaceous gland. When excess oil (sebum) combines with dead skin cells, the follicle can become obstructed, creating an environment where bacteria proliferate and inflammation develops.

Three primary factors contribute to acne formation:

Acne Lesions

These include visible manifestations such as blackheads (open comedones), whiteheads (closed comedones), papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts.

Bacterial Proliferation

The skin naturally hosts bacteria including Cutibacterium acnes (formerly Propionibacterium acnes). When follicles become clogged with sebum and keratinised cells, this bacterium can multiply and trigger an inflammatory immune response.

Follicular Occlusion (closed pores)

When the follicular canal becomes obstructed by sebum and cellular debris, oil accumulates beneath the skin’s surface, creating the conditions for comedone formation and bacterial growth.

Effective acne management therefore focuses on maintaining clear follicles, regulating inflammation, and protecting the skin barrier.

Recognising Acne Patterns

Not all acne behaves in the same way. Dermatologically, acne can be classified by trigger patterns, lesion type, and severity.

Hormonal Acne

Hormonal acne typically presents as deeper, inflammatory lesions concentrated along the lower face, jawline, and neck. These lesions may appear cyclically, often coinciding with hormonal fluctuations related to menstruation, stress, or endocrine changes.

Acne Mechanica

Acne mechanica develops from repeated friction, heat, pressure, and occlusion on the skin. Common triggers include helmet straps, sports bras, backpacks, tight clothing, or prolonged contact with equipment.

Acne Cosmetica

Acne cosmetica results from pore-occluding cosmetic or skincare products. It often appears as small, uniform bumps (closed comedones) on the forehead, cheeks, or temples and may be exacerbated by heavy product layering or incomplete makeup removal.

Severity can range from mild non-inflammatory comedones to inflammatory lesions such as papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts, with treatment approaches varying accordingly.

MOSAIK’s Barrier-First Approach

Traditional acne care has often focused on aggressively removing oil. However, excessive cleansing or harsh active ingredients can disrupt the stratum corneum barrier, potentially increasing irritation, inflammation, and sensitivity.

MOSAIK’s philosophy emphasises supporting skin balance while gently addressing congestion.

Hormonal Acne Support

• Gentle, non-stripping cleansing to reduce inflammatory triggers
• Targeted exfoliation, may use low-percentage BHAs or PHAs two to three times per week* consult with Dermatologist
• Lightweight, barrier-supportive serums and moisturisers
• Cycle-aware routines that prioritise soothing care during periods of heightened inflammation

Acne Cosmetica (Makeup-Related)

• Morning routines centred on lightweight hydration and non-comedogenic SPF
• Consistent cleansing in the evening, especially on makeup days
• Mild chemical exfoliation one to three times per week to maintain follicular clarity
• Avoidance of heavy occlusive textures on congestion-prone areas

Acne Mechanica (Friction-Related)

• Wearing breathable, sweat-wicking fabrics
• Showering or cleansing soon after exercise or heat exposure
• Gentle cleansers capable of removing sweat, SPF, and environmental debris
• Optional mild exfoliation two to three times per week for areas prone to body breakouts

MOSAIK Products for Acne-Prone Skin

MOSAIK’s Japanese-formulated skincare is developed with barrier preservation, inflammation control, and universal skin compatibility at its core. Acne-prone skin often benefits most from formulations that maintain physiological balance rather than aggressive, overly complex routines. All of our products are also non-comedogenic!

FaceRx D03 Serum

One formulation particularly well suited to acne-prone individuals is MOSAIK’s FaceRx D03 Serum.

Originally developed with melanin-rich and darker skin tones in mind, the formulation is also highly compatible with oily and breakout-prone skin profiles, where excess sebum production can increase the likelihood of follicular congestion and inflammatory lesions.

FaceRx D03 is designed to support skin clarity by:

  • Helping regulate excess oil production, reducing conditions that contribute to pore congestion
  • Supporting even skin tone, which can be particularly beneficial for post-inflammatory pigmentation often associated with acne
  • Providing lightweight hydration without occlusive textures that may aggravate oily or breakout-prone areas
  • Promoting a calmer, more balanced skin environment through anti-inflammatory botanical support
  • Its mild and silky texture absorbs quickly, making it suitable for daily use in both morning and evening routines, particularly across the T-zone, jawline, and areas prone to hormonal or congestion-related breakouts.

For optimal results, FaceRx D03 can be paired with MOSAIK’s Gentle Hydrating Cream Cleanser, a formulation designed to cleanse effectively while preserving the skin’s natural barrier. If the skin has no open breakouts, then mild exfoliation using our Revitalising Face Scrub 1-2 times per week can help with skin renewal and cellular turnover.

By combining gentle cleansing, targeted serum treatment, and protective daily habits, the skin can gradually return to a state of clarity, comfort, and resilience.
